28,251 foot mountain K2, the world's second highest, was the scene of a mountaineering disaster in 2008 that led to the death of 11 climbers. Journalist Bowley provides a riveting account of the events on August 1, 2008 when climbing teams from several countries, including the Netherlands, Korea, Serbia, and the United States attempted to summit the mountain. Unstable conditions resulted in the collapse of a serac (a column of glacial ice) that sliced the fixed ropes below the summit, trapping many climbers on the summit, and sending one sliding to his death.
