Cornelius Ryan's book about the D-Day invasion of Normandy, originally published in 1959, is rightly viewed as a masterpiece of military history. Written in a compelling style that makes it a quick and easy read, Ryan gives equal attention to all the various participants in the battle: the British, American, French, Canadian, and German forces, as well as the contributions of brave French civilians. While the strategies mapped out at the highest levels of command are described, individual accounts of bravery at the foot soldier level are also featured heavily. A masterful account of one of the most important days of the 20th century.
